Medical School Testimony
By Oseyi Omokhoa
My testimony
This testimony has been 2 years in the making and I am so
excited that I can finally share it. I
hope this inspires someone to trust in God’s plan because He really knows best
~ Jeremiah 29:11
11For I know the plans I have for
you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.
For as long as I can remember I have wanted to be a doctor;
partly because I spent a lot of my childhood in the hospital and also because my
mum was a nurse. I lived in Ireland at the time, but I had always wanted to go
to University of Cambridge to study Medicine. I was and still am very ambitious
so I wanted to go to a world renowned university. I thought that going to such a
prestigious school would validate my intelligence, boy was I wrong.
In Year 12 my focus was to get into Cambridge, that is all I
wanted to do. I was so sure that I would get in that in year 12 I only went to
a Cambridge open day. I would watch peoples Cambridge testimonies on YT. I even
attended a Cambridge Medicine Masterclass at which I realised that Cambridge’s teaching
style was a little too traditional for my liking.
Just a little background; aspiring medics take admissions
tests, in the summer after Year 12, called UCAT and BMAT. These tests are similar
to aptitude tests but they also test your capacity to become a competent doctor
in the future. Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge) and some other universities use
BMAT whilst most UK universities use UCAT.
The night before my UCAT exam, I remember doing a practice
test and I FLOPPED hard, at that point I was just done, so I prayed to God and
said that if I am meant to be a doctor I
will ace this exam. The next day I was PRAYING during that exam because I had
no clue how I would do. The Holy Spirit took control and I did better than I would
have ever imagined! Even so, I still was not satisfied because a part of me still
wanted to go into Cambridge, so I started revising for BMAT. This was in vain
because I flopped the BMAT I got 3.3, 3.3 and 2A which is basically got a D/E.
So that was the final death of my Cambridge dream and this
is when I realised that I jammed by only going to one Open day. But by God’s
grace I went to a University fair where I picked up random prospectuses on my
way to Cambridge’s stall. When I realised that I wasn’t going to Cambridge I
decided to take a look and I saw a University of Kent prospectus and I just
knew that this is where I was meant to be so I looked in it but I realised that
they don’t offer medicine but something told me to do some research so I
googled and came across Kent and Medway Medical School, a brand new medical
school opening in 2020 and I thought “ this is where I am meant to be!”. I knew
that it was God’s plan for me to go to KMMS.
In October I
completed my UCAS application, I applied for medicine at KMMS, Liverpool,
Newcastle and Manchester and Biomedical Science at Kent. 1st of November I
receive an offer for biomed, I was happy and incredibly grateful, but of course
I still wanted medicine.
From December to
January I received all off my invitations to interview for medicine. Obviously
at this point I was GASSED because I was like wow all my medical schools want me.
I went to 3 out of 4 interviews and was rejected from all of them. I was so
confused because I knew it was God’s plan for me to go to KMMS, then I got an
email explaining that I performed well enough in my KMMS interview to be placed
on the waitlist and I will find out if I got in on results day.
In May, God spoke to me and told me my purpose while I was praying
with my family, and what he told me requires me to be a doctor so I was very
confused as to how I was meant to get to that point. Then later in May I have a
dream where I accepted my biomedical science offer so when I woke up I prayed and felt led to accept it
that very morning, and I did. There are many ways into medicine, so I just
figured that I would do Biomedical Science as an undergraduate degree and then
Graduate Medicine afterwards. After I accepted my offer I had a dream that I
was speaking to one of my friends who also applied for medicine and I told her I
was still waiting on my medicine offer, this dream was set in July/August and
it ties into this testimony later on.
All of this happened during the time of COVID-19, so my
exams were cancelled, and everything was really unsure, and to get off of the KMMS
waitlist I needed to get at least AAB and someone else needed to reject their
offer. I had honestly lost hope because I could probably get AAB if I sat my exams,
but I did not know what the algorithm would give me. During this time I lost my
father which was very tough, but he always told me to do what makes me happy
whether that was biomed, medicine or something else entirely. So, I just held
onto that word until results day and while I was reassured that he would be
proud of me no matter what path I took I knew that I wanted to get into medicine
to make him and my mum proud.
Now on results day I woke up and checked my results online,
I got AABB! I got the grades to get into medical school! So, I wait to hear
from KMMS to see what the next step is but it’s just radio silence, no email,
no call nothing. At this point I’m quite nervous so I call University of Kent
and explain the situation to the clearing officer, and she tells me that
because of COVID and deferred entry KMMS are not taking any students from the
waitlist. I was immediately discouraged but God spoke to me again and He said
that “what man says doesn’t matter, only what I say”. All I could do at this
point was to trust in God, so I start singing “Praise Him in Advance by Marvin
Sapp”.
Later in the day, I receive an email from KMMS about booking
a one on one session with the head of admissions to answer any questions. I
book it and the admissions officer tells me I was extremely high on the waitlist
and I will hear back from them any time between that evening to the 31st
August. God spoke to me again and said that I would hear back on the 14th
but I still did not believe it. (Stubbornness will not kill me IJN)
On the 14th of August in the middle of a
prayer call I receive a call from Canterbury, England. On that very phone call I
was given an offer to study medicine at KMMS! Then a few days later I was
awarded my centre assessed grades and my grades changed from AABB to A*AAB.
I have just started my first week of medical school and
all I can do is thank God. This past year has been full of so many hardships,
but God has kept me through it all. He has been with me and has shown me love
and mercy and I am so grateful for all that He has done. The purpose of this
testimony is just a reminder to trust in what God has promised you. His words
will never go back to Him void and his plan for you is greater than you could
ever imagine.
God bless and stay safe!
